ULTRAMARINES
INCI: Ultramarines
What is Ultramarines?
Ultramarines are a type of synthetic compound of sodium aluminum sulfosilicate. They are a deep blue color pigment, originally obtained by grinding naturally occurring stones of lapis lazuli. Bright blue, lavender, and purple fine pigments are available. The name "ultramarines" comes from the Latin word ultramarinus, which means 'beyond the sea.' They are now available in other color forms such as green, red, pink, and violet. In addition to their uses in industry, they are also used in cosmetic and personal care products.
Use & Benefits:
- Color Variety: Ultramarines are used in a variety of cosmetic and personal care products as a colorant.
- Pigmentation: They are used as a pigment to impart color to various products.
- FDA Approval: The FDA has permanently listed inorganic, synthetic pigments (of various colors) for exterior use only, including those judged safe for use around the eyes.
- Natural Origin: Although certain ultramarine colors are derived from minerals, the process of transforming the raw mineral into diverse ultramarine colors renders them unnatural.
- Insolubility: These pigments are insoluble in water.
- Product Formulation: They are used in formulations of creams, lotions, gels, shampoos, soaps, conditioners, and other skin and hair care products.
