What is Triticum vulgare germ extract?
Triticum vulgare germ extract is obtained from the plant Triticum vulgare, of the family Graminaceae. It is commonly known as a wheat plant. The wheat plant is one of the most abundantly cultivated crops throughout the world. It is also one of the most abundantly eaten cereals in the world. Apart from being used in food, the seeds are also used for their medicinal properties. Two parts of the seed, namely the bran—the outer covering of the seed—and the germ, the part of the seed that will grow into a new plant, are used. The extract obtained from the germ of the seed is a clear, colorless to light yellow liquid. It is rich in essential nutrients like vitamin E, folic acid, fatty acids, fatty alcohols, and some other nutrients. It is used in medicines and also as a useful ingredient in cosmetic products.

- Antioxidant Properties: At a concentration of 5-10%, Triticum vulgare germ extract is used to combat free radicals produced by exposure to environmental factors like radiation, pollution, and other toxic chemicals. These free radicals can break down collagen, hindering the skin repair process, and result in inflammation, fine lines, wrinkles, and infections such as acne and dark patches. Antioxidants scavenge these free radicals and reduce the visible signs of aging, brightening the skin and increasing collagen synthesis.
- Emollient Benefits: As an emollient, it forms a thin film on the surface of the skin which acts as a barrier, protecting the skin from allergies, bacteria, and irritants that can penetrate deeper layers of the skin, causing disorders such as acne, eczema, dryness, and itching. It also fills the gaps between the dead cells and maintains the lipid barrier.
- Humectant Qualities: It helps to maintain moisture in the skin, making it appear softer, smoother, and healthier.
- Skin Conditioning Agent: It is used in the formulations of various cosmetic products including creams, lotions, shampoos, conditioners, sun care products, and other skin and hair care products, improving the health and youthfulness of the skin.
