What is Tricaprylin?
Tricaprylin is an organic compound. It is a triester of glycerine and caprylic acid. Caprylic acid is obtained from its natural sources like palm and coconut oil. Tricaprylin is a colorless, odorless, viscous, clear liquid with an amber-brown hue. It is used in pharmaceuticals as a solvent or carrier and also in cosmetic products.
Use & Benefits:
- Emollient: Tricaprylin functions as an emollient, producing a thin layer on the skin's surface which fills in the spaces between dead cells, preserves the lipid barrier, and maintains moisture. This makes the skin appear softer, smoother, and healthier.
- Masking Agent: It is used to mask the unpleasant odor of other ingredients present in the product, contributing to a more appealing scent.
- Solvent: Tricaprylin acts as a solvent in various cosmetic products, enhancing the solubility of other components.
- Skin Conditioning: It conditions the skin by forming a barrier that protects against allergies, bacteria, and irritants that could penetrate deeper layers of the skin. This helps prevent skin disorders such as acne, eczema, dryness, and itching.
- Surfactant: As a surfactant, it lowers the surface tension between two components of the product, such as two liquids or a liquid and a solid, and contains hydrophilic and hydrophobic ends. This helps collect and remove dirt, oil, and other pollutants from the skin's surface, which can then be easily rinsed away with water.
