TREHALOSE
INCI: Trehalose
What is Trehalose?
Trehalose is a kind of disaccharide consisting of two glucose units. Its other names are mycose or tremalose. Trehalose occurs naturally in microorganisms, plants, and a few small animals like shrimps, serving as a source of energy for them. It was first discovered by H.A.L. Wiggers in 1832 from the ergot of rye. Trehalose is primarily used as a source of energy and also as an additive in food items and in several medicines.
Use & Benefits:
- Humectant Properties: Trehalose functions as a humectant, moisturizing agent, and antioxidant. Being hygroscopic, it draws water from the air to moisturize the skin.
- Suitable for Various Skin Types: It can be used on all skin types but works best on normal and somewhat dry skin.
- Moisture Retention: Enhances the skin's ability to retain moisture, aiding in overall hydration.
- Skin Health Support: Helps the skin shed dead cells and protects against conditions like acne.
- Improves Skin Texture: Regular use makes the skin appear softer, smoother, and more hydrated.
- Natural Moisturizing Factor: Forms part of the natural moisturizing factors that keep the upper layer of the skin hydrated and prevent drying and flaking.
- Antioxidant Benefits: Scavenges free radicals that break down collagen and hinder the skin repair process, reducing signs of aging like fine lines and wrinkles.
- Environmental Protection: Offers protection against environmental stresses like radiation and pollution, which lead to free radical formation and subsequent skin issues.
- Enhances Skin Appearance: Brightens the skin, increases collagen synthesis, and improves overall skin health and youthfulness.
- Versatility in Formulations: Used in a variety of products including creams, lotions, gels, shampoos, conditioners, sun care, and other skin and hair care products.
