THIOCTIC ACID
INCI: Thioctic acid
What is Thioctic acid?
Thioctic acid, also known as lipoic acid or alpha lipoic acid, is an organosulfur compound derived from caprylic acid. Thioctic Acid is a "non-vitamin" nutrient that is necessary for life; it is both fat and water soluble, making it easy to absorb and transfer across cell membranes. It is also known to increase the amounts of glutathione, a peptide, in cells. It is produced naturally in animal bodies and is required for normal metabolism. It is commercially manufactured as a dietary supplement and as a useful ingredient in cosmetic products.
Use & Benefits:
- Antioxidant Protection: Thioctic acid functions as an antioxidant. Our body produces free radicals due to exposure to environmental factors like radiation, pollution, and other toxic chemicals. These free radicals break down collagen, hindering the skin repair process.
- Anti-Aging: It leads to inflammation, fine lines, wrinkles, and infections like acne and dark spots. Antioxidants scavenge these free radicals and reduce these visible signs of aging.
- Skin Brightening: Thioctic acid brightens the skin, increases collagen synthesis, and improves the health and youthfulness of the skin.
- Cosmetic Applications: Because of its capacity to scavenge free radicals that cause premature aging and wrinkles, thioctic acid is utilized in cosmetics, personal care formulas, anti-aging products, sunscreens, makeup, and other skincare products.
- Preventive Effects: Less oxidative damage is caused by confining free radicals, and aging can be prevented at the cellular level.
- Anti-Inflammatory Properties: Thioctic acid is also hypothesized to function as an anti-inflammatory by inhibiting NF-κB activation and the formation of cytokines.
