What is Stearic acid?
Stearic acid, or octadecanoic acid, is a naturally occurring saturated fatty acid. It is extracted through the saponification of oils and fats obtained from vegetables and animals. It is available as white to yellowish flakes with a slight oil-like odor and is insoluble in water. It has a number of uses, such as a food additive, for lubrication, and as a useful ingredient in cosmetic and personal care products.

- Cleanser and Surfactant: Stearic acid functions as a cleanser and surfactant in various cosmetic and personal care products. It reduces the surface tension between two components, such as liquids or a liquid and a solid. The hydrophilic and hydrophobic ends help collect dirt, oil, and other pollutants from the skin's surface, allowing them to be rinsed away with water.
- Emulsifier: As an emulsifier, stearic acid offers stability to products by preventing the separation of oil and water-based components. It ensures that the product remains stable, preventing component separation, and allowing for equitable dispersion of all components.
- Thickener: Stearic acid also acts as a thickener in the manufacturing of soaps and detergents, enhancing the texture and consistency of the final product.
