SALICYLIC ACID
INCI: Salicylic acid
What is Salicylic acid?
Salicylic acid is the most commonly used lipophilic hydroxybenzoic acid. It is obtained from its natural source, the bark of willow trees, by converting salicin to salicylic acid. Salicylic acid is listed in the WHO's list of essential medicines as the safest and most effective medicine. It is a fine white, colorless powder used in a variety of cosmetic products.
Use & Benefits:
Treatment of Infections: Salicylic acid is used to treat infections such as acne and dandruff.
Exfoliation: Salicylic acid exfoliates the skin.
Balancing Oil Secretion: Sebaceous glands present in the skin produce oil to naturally moisturize it. However, this sometimes leads to clogged pores with dirt and bacteria, which can lead to infections. Salicylic acid, being lipid-soluble, helps in balancing oil secretion.
Pore Cleansing: Salicylic acid also keeps pores free of dirt and bacteria, which can then be rinsed off easily with water.
Reduction of Blemishes and Infections: Salicylic acid reduces blemishes and infections in the skin.
Hair Care: When used on hair, salicylic acid reduces dandruff and enhances the growth of healthy hair.
Skin Appearance: Proper use of salicylic acid makes the skin appear smooth, soft, and refreshed.
Anti-Aging: Salicylic acid is used as an ingredient in anti-aging creams and reduces signs of aging such as wrinkles and fine lines in the skin.
Use in Formulations: Salicylic acid is used in the formulation of creams, lotions, shampoos, conditioners, anti-aging creams, exfoliators, and other skin and hair care products.
