VITAMIN B2

INCI: Riboflavin

What is Riboflavin?

Vitamin B2, or Riboflavin, is one of the most widely distributed vitamins. It is found in all plants and animals, such as cereals, grains, meat, fish, and dairy products. It was discovered in 1920 and manufactured for the first time in 1935. The WHO has listed it as one of the safest and most effective medicines on the List of Essential Medicines. It is a yellow to orange-colored powder with low solubility in water. It is essential for healthy eyes and body growth. Vitamin B2 is used in cosmetic products as a coloring agent and skin conditioning agent. For more information, refer to riboflavin.

Use & Benefits:

  • Metabolism Support: Vitamin B2 is a micronutrient that helps the body metabolize fats, carbohydrates, amino acids, and proteins. It is also important in the processes of cell respiration and growth.
  • Rich Food Sources: It can be found in milk, cheese, leafy green vegetables, liver, kidneys, legumes, yeast, mushrooms, and almonds, among other foods.
  • Connective Tissue Health: Riboflavin is crucial for the body's connective tissues and is utilized in skincare and cosmetics.
  • Skin, Hair, and Nail Care: Due to its potential benefits, it is used as a skin care and cosmetics element to help the skin, hair, and nails.
  • Antioxidant Properties: Vitamin B2 acts as an antioxidant, thus preventing dryness and wrinkles by reducing oxidation in the skin.
  • Cosmetic Applications: When used in cosmetics and personal care products, it is primarily seen as a skin conditioning agent, though it can also be used as a light acne treatment.
  • Dietary Impact on Production: Bacteria in the large intestine produce free riboflavin, which can be absorbed in varying levels depending on the diet. Consuming vegetable-based foods results in more riboflavin production than consuming meat-based foods.
