RICE STARCH

What is Oryza sativa starch or Rice starch?
Rice starch is a polymeric carbohydrate, white free-flowing powder. It is obtained from the plant Oryza sativa, commonly known as rice. It is grass mainly cultivated in temperate regions of Asia. It gets its name from Latin words ‘Oryza’ means ‘rice’ and ‘sativa’ meaning ‘cultivated’. It is the predominant staple diet throughout the world’s half population. Starch is 80% of all present constituents in rice. Starch is made up of mainly two components – Amylose and Amylopectine. Amylopectine is the one that gives the gelatinous structure to the starch gel. The ratio of amylose and amylopectine varies within geographic varieties.

Rice starch is used in a variety of cosmetic products as a thickener, viscosity enhancer, binding and bulking agent. Similar to other starches, rice starch as a binding agent, helps in binding or holding together the ingredient in a cosmetic product in the compressed cake or tablet form of the product. With the help of the least requirement of moisture, it prevents other ingredients of the product from falling apart. It also functions as a viscosity-increasing agent which when used increases the thickness of the final product. As a bulking agent, it is used to increase the bulk of the product since in the case of some potent active ingredient/ volatile active ingredient can not be used alone to exert an effect. It is used in formulations of creams, lotions, gels, make-up, bath products, and other skincare products.
