What is Ginkgo biloba leaf extract?

Ginkgo biloba is a special plant type that lies between a fern and tree. It is also called "maidenhair tree", it is considered the oldest living species of trees on earth. A more interesting fact about ginkgo is it can grow up to 80 ft tall and can live up to 1000 years. It is native to Asia but it can also be found in North America. The leaves and fruits of the tree are considered medicinally useful. It mainly contains many unique terpenes and flavonoids, namely ginkgolide and bilobolide, tannin, catechin, quercetin, ginkgetin, and kaempferol.

Use & Benefits

The terpenes and flavonoids it contains have potent antioxidant property. It not only fights oxidative stress but also fights against free radicals’ deleterious effects. It saves skin from ongoing damage and also heals it. When it comes to antioxidants, from skin’s point of view, it automatically becomes an anti-aging ingredient. Or in other words, when skin faces any stress as the oxidative stress or stress induces by harmful UV radiations, it loses its structural components. So, skin’s layer is no more intact and can easily lead to faulty skin structure, what we call fine lines and wrinkles initially and later cellulitis. The antioxidant preserves the skin structure by replacing themselves against free radicals or reactive oxygen species. Thereby preventing the skin damage, in turn, improvement in skin appearance, fine lines, and wrinkles. The main effect on skin by gingko extract is it helps increase the production of skin proteins- collagen and elastin. So, it strengthens skin structure and can make skin look younger and fresher. It is can act as an anti-inflammatory and can improve blood circulation.  It is mainly used in skincare and body care formulation.
