What is Gaultheria procumbens leaf oil?
Wintergreen oil is obtained from the plant Gaultheria procumbens of the family Ericaceae. It is commonly known as wintergreen or eastern teaberry plant. It is a small, low-growing shrub bearing flowers and red-colored berries as its fruit. The plant is native to North America. The fruits are edible with a slight minty flavor. The leaves are used to make herbal tea and also to extract oil, which has medicinal properties. The leaves are steam distilled to obtain the oil. It is yellow to slightly pinkish in color with a strong, sweet, woody aroma. It consists of methyl salicylate, pinene, myrcene, limonene, and other compounds.
