What is Dehydroepiandrosterone?

Dehydroepiandrosterone or in shorter form DHEA is a steroid hormone, naturally found in the human body circulating in a reasonable amount. It is actually a precursor hormone for sex hormones. It is taken internally for improving the appearance of physiologically aging skin in elderly, topical use for the same purpose is also proven useful. It comes as a white crystalline powder.

DHEA is found to improve skin appearance dual ways, it stimulates the collagen synthesis on the skin, which otherwise gets diminished as we age and secondly it prevents the action of enzyme collagenase, which breaks collagen down. It resurfaces the structure of the dermis, making skin brighter and preventing epidermal thinning because of aging. It is used in antiaging skin creams and other skin care products.
