The best anti-aging active: Retinol

The best anti-aging active: Retinol

We’re sure you’ve heard the fashion magazines raving about Retinol in beauty products, but why is it so popular? In this post we’ll tell you the secret of how Retinol works and how you can take advantage of it by including it in your anti-aging treatment.

What is Retinol?

Retinol or Vitamin A is the most effective ingredient in current anti-aging treatments. Applied topically, this active treats lines and wrinkles, improves the texture of the skin giving an illuminating look to the face.

This active has been used in cosmetics for more than forty years as a treatment against acne and later has become the active reference of anti-aging treatments.

Retinol, belongs to the family of retinoids, which are used both medically and cosmetically. In medicine, the most common used are retinoic acid and tretinoin. In cosmetics it is formulated with retinol, retynil palmitate, reynil acetate, retinaldehyde. We can find several of them:

  • In its less stable form its Retinol.

  • Its more stable form, Retinaldehyde, Retinyl Palmitate and Retinyl acetate, means its less irritating than Retinol itself.

  • Retinoic acid is pure Vitamin A, which is not used in cosmetics, but which is used at a medical level.

These are the most common retinoid... to simplify the text, from now on, we will call them all Retinol.

It is advisable to start using retinol in very low concentrations so that the skin gets used to it, since it can be a little irritating. Don’t worry if you have sensitive skin, you can still have your an anti-aging treatment for sensitive skin by replacing Retinol with Vitamin B3, which is much softer and respectful to the skin.

It is important that retinol is always kept in an Airless and opaque container because if the active comes in contact with light or air, it may lose its effectiveness.

With respect to Retinol there are many unfounded myths, for example, that it can’t be used during the day nor mixed with other exfoliants. Let’s break down some of this myths in this post.

Benefits and properties of retinol

Retinol is one of the best actives that we can include in our treatment due to its multidisciplinary nature.

It is the best anti-aging active:

  • Firming agent on the skin and softens wrinkles on the face.

  • Stimulates collagen and elastin formation

  • Increases cellular renewal by eliminating dead cells and therefore gives uniformity to your skin

  • Redefines the size of the pores.

In addition to these benefits, it acts as a reinforcement:

  • Retinol has antioxidant properties, helping to prevent the signs of aging.

  • Combined with Vitamin C it makes the perfect anti-blemish equipment.

Without a doubt Retinol is the star ingredient of many beauty products!

Cosmetic treatments with retinol

After having delved into the properties of this active, would you like a Lesielle treatment that includes Retinol? Let’s take a look!

Firstly we are going to need a suitable base for our skin type with sun protection factor since retinol makes the skin more sensitive to the sun. A night treatment won’t require a sun protection base.
Next simple include the actives!

Are you looking for an Antiaging effect? For the perfect combination you’ll need Retinol + Vitamin C. Retinol will correct the signs of ageing and Vitamin C will prevent and fight against blemishes.

Do you also want an exfoliate?

  • Retinol + Vitamin C + Salicylic Acid for normal to oily skin

  • Retinol + Vitamin C + Glycolic Acid for normal to dry skin

Easy, right?

If you have never used Retinol you can start with the lowest concentration of Lesielle (0.3%) and then increase to the second concentration (1.97%).

If you have sensitive skin, but want to use retinol, you can try it by adding it to your Lesielle base to check how your skin reacts to it. If all goes well, you can add it to the rest of the actives.

Looking forward to you being part of the #LesielleRevollution!
