The sun is an indisputable source of energy and abundance, benefiting from its Vitamin D which strengthens our immune system. It also provides us with a tan in summer which we can’t deny we love so much. However, the sun's rays can also become very harmful if we sunbathe excessively or overexpose ourselves without properly protect ourselves from them. Do you know what photoaging is and how it is produced? Let's explain it to you in depth.
Photoaging is, in a simple way, is the premature aging of the skin caused by the sun's effect. The main signs that lead to photo-aging in the skin are wrinkles, pigmentation/discoloration, actinic keratosis (a thick scaly patch on the skin), and in the worst cases, skin cancer.
Ultraviolet rays damage skin cells and other fibers that structure the skin such as collagen and elastin. This causes smooth and even skin to become prematurely aged skin.
When we expose ourselves to the sun, UV rays penetrate the skin. The skin protects itself by producing melanin. This is what is known as tanning. Actually, tanning is nothing more than the skins defense mechanism against the sun's rays. Although there are more types of UV rays, we are going to focus on UVA rays because these are the ones we associate most with photo-aging damage. UVA rays penetrate deep into the dermis and cause damage to the collagen fibers. To compensate for these damages, our body produces an elastin increase. This "abnormal" process causes the skin to deteriorate as the skin is not functioning properly nor behaving correctly resulting in a more aged look.
In addition to wrinkles, prolonged sunbathing leads to the appearance of sunspots, which also damages the skin giving it an irregular texture.
In this case, it is always better to prevent than to cure. We must protect ourselves against photoaging before it occurs.
