What is Tribehenin?
Tribehenin is an organic compound formed from glycerin and behenic acid. It is a type of long-chain fatty acid that occurs naturally in animal fats and plant oils, such as coconut and palm nut oil. Tribehenin occurs in the form of a soft, amorphous solid wax and is insoluble in water. It is used at a concentration of 0.5–10%. It serves as a useful ingredient in cosmetic and personal care products.

- Emollient Properties: Tribehenin acts as an emollient, filling in the spaces between the skin's dead cells, which makes the skin appear soft and smoother. It forms a thin film on the surface of the skin.
- Skin Protection: It creates a barrier that protects the skin from allergies, bacteria, and irritants, which can penetrate deeper layers of the skin. It does not cause skin disorders such as acne, eczema, dryness, and itching.
- Moisture Retention: As an emollient, it maintains the lipid barrier and helps to retain moisture in the skin, making it appear softer, smoother, and healthier.
- Conditioning Effect: It keeps the skin conditioned and, when used in hair, prevents water loss by forming a thin film on the surface. This makes hair appear soft, silky, and conditioned.
- Thickening Agent: Tribehenin is also used as a thickening and suspending agent to provide the required thickness to cosmetic products.
- Versatile Usage: It is used in formulations of creams, lotions, conditioners, makeup, sun care, and other skin and hair care products.
