TOCOTRIENOLS
INCI: Tocotrienols
What is Tocotrienols?
Tocotrienols are compounds that form part of Vitamin E along with tocopherols. There are four different types of tocotrienols: alpha, beta, gamma, and delta. These types of tocotrienols occur naturally in vegetable oils like rice bran oil, palm oil, etc. They were first discovered in 1964 by Pennock and Whittle from rubber. They are mainly used as dietary supplements and also as useful ingredients in cosmetics and personal care products.
Use & Benefits:
- Antioxidant Properties: Tocotrienols function as antioxidants and skin conditioning agents. They are generally used at a concentration of 0.5-2.5% depending on the type of product.
- Protection Against Environmental Factors: Environmental factors such as radiation, pollution, and other hazardous chemicals cause our bodies to produce free radicals.
- Anti-Aging Effects: Free radicals break down collagen, which slows the skin's healing process and leads to inflammation, fine lines, wrinkles, and conditions such as acne and black patches.
- Free Radical Scavenging: Antioxidants scavenge these free radicals, reducing outward signs of aging.
- Skin Brightening: Tocotrienols brighten the skin and increase collagen synthesis.
- Improvement of Skin Health: Tocotrienols improve the skin's health and youthful appearance.
- Enhanced Moisture Retention: They boost the skin's ability to retain water, help retain moisture, and keep the stratum corneum layer of the skin hydrated.
- Conditioning: Tocotrienols keep the skin conditioned.
- Versatile Use in Products: They are used in formulations of creams, lotions, gels, makeup, sunscreens, and other skin and hair care products.
