Thymus vulgaris oil, or Thyme oil, is obtained from the thyme plant. It is also known as Thymus vulgaris, of the family Lamiaceae. It is an aromatic, perennial, evergreen plant. It is cultivated in many countries throughout the world. Thyme leaves are used for culinary purposes. The oil is extracted from the plant by the process of steam distillation. The oil is a light to amber-colored liquid with a characteristic odor. It consists of compounds like thymol and carvacrol. It is used as an antiseptic and to treat various other ailments.
