What is Tannic acid?
Tannic acid is a polyphenolic compound. It is a type of tannin extracted from the nutgalls formed by insects living on twigs of certain oak trees of the Quercus species. Tannic acid, together with activated charcoal and magnesium oxide, was once employed in the "universal antidote," which was used to treat poisoning. The combination of these three components was thought to be more effective at absorbing poisons than each of the ingredients alone. Tannic acid is a weak acid primarily used as medicine to treat ailments like cold sores, blemishes, and rashes.
