What is Superoxide dismutase?
Superoxide dismutase is a type of enzyme. It occurs naturally in living cells, including animal and plant cells. This enzyme protects cells from damage caused by superoxide radicals. It breaks down the radical into oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. This enzyme was first discovered in 1968 by Irwin Fridovich and Joe McCord. It is now commercially used in pharmaceuticals and also in cosmetic products.
