SORBITAN STEARATE
INCI: Sorbitan Stearate
What is Sorbitan Stearate?
Sorbitan stearate is an anionic surfactant formed by reacting sorbitol and stearic acid. It occurs in the form of yellow pellets, is odorless, and is insoluble in water and oil. Berries and other vegetable debris are the sources of sorbitan stearate. The molecule is created by mixing a sugar alcohol called sorbitol with fatty acids from vegetables to create a natural alcohol. Natural sources of sorbitol include corn, plums, and a variety of other common foods. When sorbitol and fatty acids combine, a new molecule is formed that retains sorbitol's humectant qualities while also making the alcohol a good skin moisturizer and softener. This is why it is contained in anti-aging formulations, rash therapy creams, and dry skin treatments. Sunscreen lotions and creams benefit from its hydrating characteristics. Thus, it is mainly used in the manufacturing of healthcare, food, and cosmetic products.
Use & Benefits:
- Emulsifier Functionality: Sorbitan stearate is used in a variety of cosmetic products as an emulsifier, which offers stability to the product.
- Prevention of Separation: It prevents the oil and water-based components of the product from separating into their constituents.
- Stabilization: As an emulsifier, it stabilizes the product, inhibits component separation, and ensures even dispersion of the product's components.
- Wetting Agent: Sorbitan stearate is used as a wetting agent and dispersant for pigments in color cosmetics.
- Versatile Use in Formulations: It is used in formulations of creams, lotions, gels, makeup products, perfumes, fragrances, and other skincare products.
