INCI: Sorbitan sesquioleate
What is Sorbitan sesquioleate?
Sesquioleate belongs to a chemical group called sorbitan esters, formed by reacting the polyol sorbitol with fatty acids like oleic acid, linoleic acid, and stearic acid. As the name suggests, sesquioleate contains two parts oleate (from oleic acid) and one part sorbitan. Both of these components can be obtained from natural sources. Sesquioleate is a white or tan-colored solid, but a liquid form is also commercially available.

Emollient and Emulsifier: Sesquioleate functions as an emollient and emulsifier, making it an important ingredient from both a skincare and a formulation point of view.
Non-ionic Emulsifier: Sesquioleate is also a non-ionic emulsifier.
Easily Absorbed: As an ester of fatty acids like oleic acid, sesquioleate is easily absorbed into the skin, making it available for use.
Nourishing: Sesquioleate nourishes the skin.
Stabilizing: Its chemical components can combine with both water-based and oil-based molecules, making it an effective stabilizer for cosmetic products.
Pigment Wetting Agent: Its liquid form is used as a colorant or pigment wetting agent that imparts color to any cosmetic formulation.
Versatile Ingredient: Sesquioleate is used in the formulation of creams, lotions, gels, shampoos, conditioners, and other skin and hair care products.
