What is Solanum tuberosum starch/ Solanum tuberosum pulp extract?
Solanum tuberosum extract is obtained from the plant Solanum tuberosum, commonly known as a potato plant. It is native to Peru, America, and is now cultivated throughout the world. The plant is a perennial herb with white, pink, or purple flowers. Potatoes are a root vegetable. They are used in food and also to extract starch.

- Binding and Viscosity Control: Solanum tuberosum extract functions as a bulking, binding, and viscosity controlling agent. Starch present in potatoes has the quality of making bonds with water molecules and can hold water in greater amounts within its molecular strands. Depending on the quantity of water, it can serve as both a binding agent and a viscosity controlling agent.
- Bulking Agent: Without moisture, it can be used as a bulking agent. Some actives are very potent, requiring only a tiny amount to exert an effect but pose difficulty in handling to create any usable form. In such cases, potato starch increases bulk and facilitates the formation of powders or compressed cakes without altering the potency of the active.
- Skin Nourishment: The pulp extract of the potato contains compounds like tannins, flavonoids, and minerals, which nourish the skin, reduce blemishes, and make it look younger. It is used in formulations of sun and other skincare products.
