What is Sodium Sulfite?
Sodium sulfite is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula Na2SO3. It is a white crystalline solid and is soluble in water. It is included in many medications, also as a preservative for meat and dried fruits, and it helps them maintain their potency and stability. Apart from this, it is used in the paper and pulp industry.
Use & Benefits:
- Antioxidant Preservative and Hair Fixative: Sodium sulfite is used in a variety of cosmetic products. It functions as an antioxidant preservative and hair fixative.
- Prevention of Oxidation: The ingredients present in the product undergo oxidation when exposed to air, leading to changes in color and rancidity of the product. Sodium sulfite acts as a reducing agent, donating hydrogen atoms and preventing the oxidation of the ingredients.
- Hair Structure Modification: It is also used as a hair fixative. It reacts with the hair fibers and facilitates changes in their structure, helping in maintaining curls and waves in the hair.
- Cosmetic Applications: It is used in formulations of shampoos, conditioners, hair styling, and other skincare products.
