SODIUM POLYACRYLATE
INCI: Sodium polyacrylate
What is Sodium polyacrylate?
Sodium polyacrylate, also called waterlock, is the sodium salt of polyacrylic acid. Polyacrylic acid is a polymer of acrylate. Due to its water-absorbing property, it is also known as a super absorbent polymer. It is a white fluffy powder; when added to water, it forms a thick gel. It has a number of applications, such as in candles, potting soil, wound dressings, etc.
Use & Benefits:
- Thickening Agent: Sodium polyacrylate functions as a thickening agent in cosmetic products due to its water-absorbing properties. In water, the polymer chain structure forms a gel, absorbing a high amount of water which provides thickness and suspension to the product.
- Film-Forming Agent: It also has film-forming properties. When used, it forms a thin film on the skin, giving it a smooth and soft look.
- Binding Agent: As a binder, it is essential for products like compact powder in cake form or eye shadow in tablet form. It acts by holding the dry powders together with the appropriate amount of moisture.
- Emulsion Stabilizer: It offers product stability as an emulsifier. The oil and water-based components of the product are separated into their constituents. When utilized, an emulsifier stabilizes the product, prevents component separation, and allows for equitable dispersion of the product's components.
- Emollient: As an emollient, it occupies spaces between the cells on the top layer of the skin, making it look firmer and smoother. It forms a barrier that protects the skin from allergies, bacteria, and irritants that pass into deeper layers of the skin. It also helps maintain moisture in the skin, making it appear softer, smoother, and healthier. Hair
- Fixative Agent: Sodium polyacrylate acts as a hair fixative agent by holding hair in place and adding texture.
