SODIUM LACTATE
INCI: Sodium lactate
What is Sodium lactate?
Sodium lactate is the sodium salt of lactic acid, which is a type of alpha hydroxy acid (AHA). Sodium lactate is obtained through the fermentation of sugar sources such as corn starch, potatoes, or molasses. It is a clear liquid without any odor and is soluble in water. Sodium lactate is used as a preservative, bulking agent, and in medicines.
Use & Benefits:
Uses & Benefits:
• Humectant, Preservative, and Buffering Agent: Sodium lactate is used in a variety of cosmetic products.
• Natural Moisturizing Factor (NMF): Sodium lactate occurs naturally in the skin as part of NMF. With aging, the NMF factor reduces, which leads to aging effects such as fine lines and wrinkles.
• Replenishes and Moisturizes Skin: Sodium lactate present in the product replenishes and moisturizes the skin. It draws water from the water vapor present in the air and moisturizes the skin.
• Suitable for All Skin Types: It can be used on all skin types, especially on normal and mildly dry skin types.
• Retains Moisture and Enhances Water Retention: It helps in retaining moisture in the skin, enhances the water retention capacity of the skin, and aids in shedding dead cells from the skin.
• Protects Skin from Infections: It protects the skin from infections such as acne.
• Improves Skin Appearance: It makes the skin appear softer, smoother, and more hydrated.
pH Balance:
• Maintains Skin's Normal pH Balance: The pH of the skin is slightly acidic, known as the acidic mantle. It is maintained by the sebaceous glands, sweat glands, and natural flora of the skin.
• Provides Protection to the Skin: This provides protection to the skin from external factors such as microbes, irritants, and exposure to harmful rays.
• Reduces Premature Aging and Irritation: It helps in reducing premature aging and irritation of the skin.
• Important to Maintain Normal pH Balance: It is important to maintain the normal pH balance of the skin to prevent detrimental effects on the skin such as itching and depletion of vital lipids from the skin.
• Functions as pH Adjusters and Mild Preservative: pH adjusters or buffers maintain this pH balance of the product and prevent the skin's pH from shifting too far from the normal one. It also functions as a mild preservative and protects the product from deteriorating due to the growth of fungus in the product.
Usage in Products:
• Used in Various Cosmetic and Hair Care Products: Sodium lactate is used in the formulation of makeup products, eye contour, shampoos, conditioners, and other skin and hair care products.
