SODIUM HYDROXIDE
INCI: Sodium hydroxide
What is Sodium hydroxide?
Sodium hydroxide, or caustic soda, is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula NaOH. It is a colorless crystalline solid with solubility in water and is used in many industries, including paper and pulp, textiles, and soaps and detergents.
Use & Benefits:
Buffering Agent: Sodium hydroxide is used as a buffering agent in a variety of cosmetic products.
Acidic Mantle: The pH of the skin is slightly acidic, known as the acidic mantle, which is maintained by the sebaceous glands, sweat glands, and natural flora of the skin.
Protection: The acidic mantle provides protection against external factors such as microbes, irritants, and harmful rays.
Reduction of Premature Aging and Irritation: Sodium hydroxide helps reduce premature aging and skin irritation.
Maintaining Normal pH Balance: Maintaining the normal pH balance of the skin is important in order to prevent detrimental effects such as itching and depletion of vital lipids from the skin.
pH Adjusters: pH adjusters or buffers maintain this pH balance of the product and avoid the skin’s pH from shifting too far from the normal range.
Formulations: Sodium hydroxide is used in the formulations of creams, lotions, gels, makeup, and hair care products.
