VITAMIN K
INCI: Phytondione
What is Phytondione?
Vitamin K, or Phytondione, is a lipid-soluble vitamin. It is made in the liver and plays a very important role in the clotting of blood. It was first isolated in 1939. Edward Doisy and Henrik Dam were awarded the Nobel Prize in 1943 for its discovery. Vitamin K is included in the list of safest and most effective medicines by the WHO (World Health Organization). It is used as a medicine to treat many ailments. In cosmetic products, it is used to reduce vascular conditions that develop due to aging. For more information, refer to phytondione.
Use & Benefits:
- Dietary Sources: Vitamin K includes Phylloquinone (Vitamin K1) and a group of menaquinones (Vitamin K2). The predominant dietary form of Vitamin K is phylloquinone, found primarily in green leafy vegetables. Menaquinones, mostly bacterial in origin, can be found in trace amounts in various animal and fermented foods. Spinach, broccoli, iceberg lettuce, and fats and oils, especially soybean and canola oil, are the most prevalent sources.
- Essential Nutrient: Vitamin K is necessary for blood clotting, bone formation, and other vital functions.
- Antioxidant Properties: Vitamin K acts as a powerful antioxidant, preventing free radical damage, which is crucial for maintaining beautiful and healthy skin.
- Skin Renewal and Growth Control: Vitamin K is involved in tissue renewal and the control of cell growth, contributing to softer, more radiant, and younger-looking skin.
- New Skin Cell Production: Vitamin K aids in producing new skin cells, allowing fresh, healthy cells to replace older, dry, and hard skin cells, particularly in the outer skin. The new and fresher skin cells will be exposed once the dead skin cells have been removed.
- Collagen Protection: Vitamin K helps protect the body's collagen, enhancing skin appearance by making it plump, smooth, and youthful, thereby preserving skin suppleness and reducing wrinkles and fine lines.
- Blood Vessel Strength: Known for its anticoagulant properties, Vitamin K helps control bleeding and strengthens blood vessels, which prevents them from breaking or being damaged and helps avoid dark circles under the eyes.
