RICE STARCH
INCI: Oryza sativa starch
What is Oryza sativa starch or Rice Starch?
Rice starch is a polymeric carbohydrate, a white free-flowing powder obtained from the plant Oryza sativa, commonly known as rice. It is a grass mainly cultivated in temperate regions of Asia. It gets its name from the Latin words ‘Oryza’ which means ‘rice’ and ‘sativa’ meaning ‘cultivated’. It is the predominant staple diet throughout half of the world’s population. Starch is 80% of all the present constituents in rice. Starch is made up of mainly two components – Amylose and Amylopectin. Amylopectin is the one that gives the gelatinous structure to the starch gel. The ratio of amylose and amylopectin varies within geographic varieties
Use & Benefits:
• Thickener: Rice starch is used as a thickener in a variety of cosmetic products.
• Viscosity enhancer: It functions as a viscosity-increasing agent which increases the thickness of the final product when used.
• Binding agent: Rice starch, similar to other starches, helps in binding or holding together the ingredients in a cosmetic product in the compressed cake or tablet form of the product. It prevents other ingredients of the product from falling apart with the least requirement of moisture.
• Bulking agent: As a bulking agent, rice starch is used to increase the bulk of the product since some potent or volatile active ingredients cannot be used alone to exert an effect.
• Versatile use: Rice starch finds its use in formulations of creams, lotions, gels, makeup, bath products, and other skincare products.
