What is DMDM hydantoin?
A DMDM hydantoin is an abbreviated form of 1,3 dimethylol-5,5-dimethylhydantoin. It is available as white, crystalline solid. It is considered as safe by CIR and European standards as well. Its mechanism of action is such that it releases formaldehyde slowly in order to carry out an action such as antimicrobial or preservative.
Use & Benefits:
It is used in cosmetics as a preservative. The preservative, just like food in cosmetics, also serves the purpose of preservation throughout the shelf life. Without it, the product may change its color, develop brown/black spots or may separate in two different phases. They act by diminishing bacterial growth in a product. Acting against exposure to oxygen is the second aspect of preservatives, they act as antioxidants and prevents oxidation of a product. So, it saves product ingredients from being oxidized or changed its chemical nature by light, heat or moisture and destabilize the product. DMDM hydantoin also considered as an antimicrobial agent. It is a broad-spectrum agent, which is effective against many bacteria, fungi, yeast, and mold. As mentioned earlier, DMDM hydantoin releases formaldehyde and in very minor concentration to exert its effect as antimicrobial agent. It is used in the formulation of shampoos and conditioners, moisturizers, skin care products, makeup bases, and foundations.
