Kaolin, Another name for hydrated aluminum magnesium silicate, is basically clay which is purified and refined to become useful in cosmetic products. Since it’s clay, it’s flaky in appearance and white in color. It is available widely and naturally on earth’s crust.

It thickens when water is added to it and doesn’t dissolve in water. It forms a suspension with water. This quality is useful in the preparation of semi-liquid preparations as a thickening agent. It is also used as filler in shaving creams, antiperspirants.
