L'aminométhylpropanediol est un amino glycol, une substance cristalline soluble dans l'eau et l'alcool. On le trouve également à l'état liquide. Sa structure a des groupes amino et alcool dans sa structure, ce qui la rend stable et adaptée aussi bien pour les phases aqueuses que pour les phases huileuses.

En raison de la disponibilité de groupes doubles sur sa structure, il est utile comme correcteur de pH et agent tampon pour les crèmes, les lotions.
