What is Tridecyl salicylate?
Tridecyl salicylate is an ester of salicylic acid, also known as beta hydroxy acid (BHA). Salicylic acid is obtained from the bark of a willow tree, Salix alba. Although salicylic acid, in its original form, is commonly used as an acne treatment ingredient due to its exfoliating qualities, tridecyl salicylate is found in personal care products as a moisturizing ingredient. Tridecyl Salicylate, during processing, is turned into a non-acid component, and hence it has no exfoliating capabilities.
Use & Benefits:
Antistatic and skin conditioning agent: Tridecyl salicylate functions as an antistatic and skin conditioning agent. The skin conditioning agent works by forming a thin layer on the surface of the skin that may be impermeable to water, enhancing its water retention capacity. It also prevents water loss and keeps skin hydrated.
UV radiation blocker: Additionally, it is known to block harmful UV radiation from reaching the deeper layers of the skin.
Preservative: Tridecyl Salicylate is used as a preservative to protect the product from degrading due to exposure to UV rays.
Multiple personal care products: It is used in formulations of moisturizers and sun care products, including moisturizers, skin cleansing products, shampoos, sunscreens, mouthwashes, and dentifrices.
FDA-approved and safe to use: Tridecyl Salicylate is an FDA-approved salicylic acid derivative that is safe to use when prepared to avoid skin irritation and when formulated to avoid increasing the skin's sun sensitivity.
