What is Spiraea ulmaria extract?
Meadowsweet extracts from a perennial herb Spiraea ulmaria. It mostly grows in damp meadows and wet woods. It is found in most parts of Europe and Western Asia. It has delicate creamy-white flowers in a cluster with a sweet smell. The whole plant has a pleasant taste and flavor. It is also called a strewing herb. Meadowsweet extract is obtained from leaves or blossoms of the plant. It contains salicylate derivatives, tannins, flavonols, heparin, mucilage, carbohydrate, ascorbic acid, minerals and sugar.

As mentioned earlier, it contains salicylate derivatives, which are closely related to aspirin. This molecule gives the extract its anti-inflammatory properties. It reduces swelling as a result of some kind of allergens, pollutants or pollens. Tannins found in the extract has astringent properties. It removes the dead skin cells, bacteria and dirt attached to the skin by loosening and bonding with their protein. It helps in cleaning of the skin, tightens the pores and gives skin a tighter appearance. It has antioxidant properties; it saves skin from free radicals that are found in the environment. It also reduces damage caused to the skin cells and rejuvenates the skin. It is used in formulations of skincare, hair care products, facial cleansing and body care products.
