What is PVP?

PVP or Polyvinylpyrrolidone, also known as povidone is a synthetic polymer of vinylpyrrolidone monomers. It is white to off white powder with a bland odor. It is synthesized by a chemical reaction called polymerization of N-vinylpyrrolidone and hydrogen peroxide. It is very popular in the list of excipients in any pharmaceutical or cosmetics products.

Use & Benefits:

PVP more useful from the formulation point of view than a skincare point of view. It functions as an effective thickening agent in semi-liquid formulations. Considering the bulkier structure of a polymer, it can occupy more space and thus increases viscosity. It can also work in synergy with other thickeners such as carbomers. Especially in gels to provide a stiffer effect. It can also act as a film former. It can form a mesh-like structure that can act as a protective film on the surface of the skin/ hair. In liquid formulations, it can be used to increase the viscosity of the product. For solid formulations like powders, tablets, etc., it can be used as a dispersant for pigments and titanium dioxide. So that even distribution and in turn uniform color property can be found throughout the product.  It is a very pH stable and non-ionic ingredient and quite a stable ingredient. used in formulations of creams, lotions, gels, shampoos, conditioners, hair sprays, and other skin and hair care products.
